Nefeli’s definitive guide to the most spectacular sunset spots on the island, plus our legendary Sunset Champagne Cruise
❝❝ Every evening on Zakynthos, the sun seems to take its time leaving. The sea begins to glow, the limestone cliffs soften into pink and gold, and just before it disappears there is often one final flash of colour that makes everyone stop and watch for a moment. ❞ ❞
Why Zakynthos Sunsets Are Different
Sunsets happen everywhere on earth. But not all sunsets are equal. The specific combination of factors on Zakynthos — the clarity of the Ionian air, the island’s westward-facing coastline, the white limestone cliffs that catch and amplify the golden light, and the vast, unobstructed expanse of the Ionian Sea stretching to the horizon — creates evening light shows of extraordinary quality. Painters have been trying to capture this light for centuries. Poets have written about it. And every evening, several hundred visitors and locals find themselves standing somewhere on this island with their phones out, trying to preserve at least a fragment of it.
I have watched this sunset from every vantage point I am about to describe, multiple times over multiple years. The feeling — that particular mixture of beauty and transience, the awareness that something genuinely magnificent is happening right in front of you — never diminishes. I believe this is one of the island’s greatest gifts: a daily reminder that the world is astonishing.
The Five Best Sunset Spots in Zakynthos
▸ 1. The Keri Area — My Personal Favourite
At the very southwestern tip of the island, at the end of a road that winds through the ancient olive groves of Keri village and past the famous natural tar springs that the historian Herodotus wrote about in the 5th century BC, lies the beautiful area of Keri.
In late summer, when the sun sets around 8 pm, this part of the island becomes one of the most beautiful places to watch the evening unfold. Whether you are standing near the Keri Lighthouse, sitting at one of the small tavernas overlooking the dramatic Mizithres rock formations, or enjoying the view from the traditional village where our Zante Sunset and Southern Hidden Gems evening tour stops, the experience is unforgettable.
As the sun slowly sinks towards the horizon, the light turns the limestone cliffs a deep, glowing gold. The sea begins to shine in shades of copper, and the Mizithres cast long shadows across the water below. For a few quiet moments the island seems to pause. The only sounds are the distant waves far beneath the cliffs and the occasional call of a bird.
It is one of those places where people naturally stop talking and simply watch the day come to an end — and it never feels quite the same twice.
▸ 2. Bohali Castle — Sunset Over the Capital
The ruined Venetian castle above Zakynthos Town, set within a beautiful pine forest on the hill above Bohali village, offers a panoramic view over the entire eastern side of the island: the town, the harbour, the bay, and the distant mountains of the Peloponnese mainland.
At sunset, the town below glows golden, the boats in the harbour cast long reflections on the still water, and the mountains on the mainland slowly shift from purple to deep navy as the light fades.
There is usually a small gathering of locals here, families, couples, and friends quietly enjoying the view from the old castle walls and watching the evening arrive. It is one of those peaceful Zakynthian moments that never feels hurried.
▸ 3. The Navagio Cliff Viewpoint — The Dramatic One
Standing above Navagio Beach as the sun descends toward the Ionian horizon is an experience of extraordinary beauty.
The white pebbles of the beach hundreds of metres below turn shades of amber and rose. The turquoise water darkens toward deep cobalt. The rust-red shipwreck casts long shadows across the sand while the towering cliffs glow in the evening light.
And the sky behind you — if the evening is clear, and most Zakynthos summer evenings are — becomes a canvas of orange, pink, and deep purple that no camera and no words can fully capture.
▸ 4. The Vassilikos Peninsula — The Quiet Sunset
The Vassilikos peninsula, in the southeast of the island, is where some of Zakynthos’s most beautiful and least developed beaches can be found.
In the evening, when the day-trippers have gone and the beach slowly becomes quiet again, the sunsets here take on a different atmosphere. At Dafni Beach, the view across the wide bay and the surrounding natural landscape creates a softer and more intimate setting for the end of the day.
It is a calmer, gentler sunset than those on the dramatic cliffs of the west coast — but no less beautiful.
▸ 5. Kampi — Sunset at the Edge of the Island
On the rugged west coast of Zakynthos lies the small mountain village of Kampi, famous for its breathtaking cliff views over the open Ionian Sea.
High above the water stands the large stone cross monument, built in memory of those who lost their lives at sea during the Second World War. From here, the view stretches endlessly across the horizon.
As the sun begins to set, the cliffs below fall into shadow while the sea slowly turns shades of deep gold and crimson. It is one of the most powerful sunset views on the island — wild, open, and unforgettable.
Many visitors stay to enjoy the evening at one of the traditional tavernas nearby, where dinner is served with a view that seems to go on forever.
Our Sunset Champagne Evening VIP Cruise
And now, the experience that I have recommended to more people — and received more glowing thank-you messages about — than almost anything else we do at Nefis Travel: our Sunset Champagne Evening VIP Cruise.
The evening begins with a comfortable coach pick-up, as we drive through the island towards the picturesque little harbour of Agios Sostis. By the time we arrive, the heat of the day has begun to soften and the light has already started to change.
From here we board our beautiful, comfortable boat and slowly leave the harbour behind, sailing out into the calm waters of the Ionian Sea.
Late afternoon on the sea has its own magic. The wind usually settles, the water becomes smooth, and the island begins to glow in the softer light of the evening.
Our first golden-hour moment comes at Turtle Island (Marathonisi), where the warm light reflects off the water and guests can enjoy a refreshing swim in the calm sea.
From there we continue along the spectacular coastline toward the Keri Caves, where another swim stop allows you to experience the sea as the colours of the evening begin to deepen — one of those simple moments that feels completely perfect.
As the sun begins its descent, we make our way toward the dramatic Mizithres rock formations, where the evening reaches its most beautiful moment. Here, with the cliffs glowing and the sea turning shades of gold and copper, a glass of champagne is served as we watch the sunset together.
The sky changes every few minutes: orange, then pink, then rose, and finally deep crimson.
And then comes the moment I have watched happen in front of hundreds of guests — and it never, ever gets old. The sun touches the horizon, the sea beneath it seems to catch fire, and for a few seconds everything becomes still.
There is always a moment of silence on the boat. People stop talking. Everyone simply watches.
And then someone quietly says what everyone is thinking.
That this — right here, right now — is exactly why they came to Zakynthos.
Nefeli's Champagne Tip: Our Sunset Cruise also offers excellent local Zakynthian white wine if you prefer it to champagne. Ask for the Verdea — it is the perfect accompaniment to a Zakynthos sunset and will become one of your most distinctive taste memories of the island.
Practical Sunset Tips
Best months: May– September . September sunsets are particularly spectacular — the air is exceptionally clear after the summer heat, and the light has a quality that photographers describe as perfect.
Best time: The sun sets between 7:30pm (in May) and 8:30pm (in August) on Zakynthos. Arrive at your chosen viewpoint 30 minutes early to watch the approach.
What to bring: A light layer for after sunset (it cools quickly), a camera with your best wide-angle lens, and an open heart.
